The Canaveral Seashore Paint Out
November 8-13-2010
For more than 20 years, the Friends of Canaveral, Inc. have supported the National Park Service in its mission to preserve, protect and interpret  the 57,000 acres of pristine shoreline, dunes and wilderness that are    Canaveral National Seashore.

The cornerstone of this plan is to enhance and support the children's Environmental  Learning Pavilion, now under construction in the park.  The Pavilion will be a place where our children can learn about their heritage and how to protect it for future generations.

More than 2000 school children each year are served by the Environmental Education Programs conducted by the National Park Service staff and volunteers at Canaveral National Seashore.

To celebrate the Canaveral National Seashore and the 21 st anniversary of the Friends, we take on a new challenge--a 5-year plan to increase public awareness of this unique barrier island which is home to over 1000 species of plants and 310 species of birds.  The park includes more than 57,000 acres of beaches, dunes, hammock, lagoon, salt marsh and pine flatland.

The cornerstone of this plan is to enhance and support the environmental learning pavilion, now under construction, that will give our children a hands-on experience to learn about their heritage and to protect it for future generations

The learning center will be a permanent  indoor facility where kids can learn as they have a lot of fun!  They can explore Turtle Mound and Mosquito Lagoon, the unique wildlife and plant life, and experience the real life of the 19th century settlers. The Timucuan Indians, the Spanish Conquistadors, and the early 19th century settlers of the Eldora community can come alive for kids and adults alike.

"The View from Turtle Mound," by Linda Blondheim, was purchased by the Friends of Canaveral and presented to Myrna Palfrey, Superintendent of Canaveral National Seashore, at the Eldora Gala on Saturday, October 29. The painting, a 24"x 20" acrylic,  will become a part of the National Park Service's permanent collection in the new Visitor Information Center, in commemoration of the second annual Canaveral Seashore Plein Air Paint Out. The Information Center is now under construction in the park, and expected to be completed in 2012.
